Beware: Bad Dates!

This Ramadan, a number of individuals and groups are increasing awareness about Israeli dates being sold around the world often disguised as from other places.
A BACEIA supporter recently wrote that in the US, Israeli dates are being sold at Costco and elsewhere:

Israeli dates being sold at Costco, and unwittingly at Arab / Muslim markets…

Dates produced in Israel on stolen Palestinian land are being sold at Costco, and at many Arab and Muslim owned markets.

Please let other know about this.

In addition to Costco, many dates sold at Arab and Muslim owned markets are also grown in Israel. (For Muslims, this is an important religious issue – because the produce of stolen land is not “halal”, and consuming it would be like consuming pork – prohibited by shariah law.)

Dates labeled “Mediterranean dates” are almost certainly Israeli – If they were from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, or anywhere else in the Middle East, they would not be ashamed or afraid to indicate their country of origin. Even Iran, which recieves a lot of negative publicity in the west, does not hesitate to put “grown in Iran” or “product of Iran” on it’s dates!

There is a widely distributed brand named “Mid-East” which uses this “Mediterannean” labeling. For some time, Israel has been using the phrases “Mediterranean” or “Mediterranean grown” for labelling products it ships to Europe. The boycott of Israeli products is having worldwide effect, and Israel avoids labeling items “Made in Israel” unless they know they are selling them directly to Jewish markets and buyers.

Even the label “California Dates” does not necessarily mean they were grown in California – and “California style” in fine print means nothing at all! It should say “grown in California”. Most California date growers are proud to print the name of their farm, and it’s address, or at least the city it’s in, on their packages.

Electronic Intifada recently published this article about dates.
Also, see these resources from the UK that have more information about the the use of stolen land and child labor in the production of Israeli dates as well as printable flyers.
